Yahoo, once the go-to news platform for internet searches, has acquired Artifact, an AI-driven news aggregation and discovery platform developed by the co-founders of Instagram. Over the years, the platform has lost some ground to Google and other platforms when it comes to finding information and news. According to Statista, in January 2024, Yahoo! accounted for approximately 1.1% of the global search market across all devices.
Artifact, founded by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, will no longer operate as a standalone app, according to an announcement from Yahoo. It works as a unique AI-powered personalization technology, and more features will be integrated across Yahoo, including the Yahoo News app, in the coming months.
How this deal helps Yahoo, Artifact
Yahoo has a large news readership, but Artifact reportedly didn't get the attention it was looking for. Yahoo is expected to help co-founder Artifact scale by delivering the most relevant articles (curated news and content experiences) to hundreds of millions of users around the world through AI has been done.
“Yahoo was one of the first companies to combine human news curation with algorithmic news curation. Since then, the machine learning and personalization landscape has changed dramatically, and Artifact has stepped up to the plate. Together, we have innovated best-in-class technology,” said Kat Downs Mulder, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Yahoo News.
“Artifact has become a beloved product, and we continue to grow its technology, furthering our mission to be the trusted guide to digital information and the best curator of connecting people to the content that matters most. I’m excited about what we can do,” Mulder said. Added.
Artifact has an AI-powered discovery engine that shows you the content you most want to see and becomes more tailored to your interests over time. The result is a personalized feed of news articles, along with a number of features aimed at improving the quality of your experience.
“AI allows us to provide a better experience for our users to find great content they are interested in. Yahoo recognizes that opportunity and is building on what we have built through Yahoo News. We couldn’t be more excited to see it live,” said Artifact CEO and Co-Founder Kevin Systrom.
Yahoo's acquisition of Artifact was completed on March 29th.
