Textual description provided by the architect. Xujiahui Sports Park was formerly known as Shanghai Sports Center and was planned in the 1960s. For nearly half a century, buildings such as the Shanghai Indoor Stadium (1973), the Shanghai Aquatics Center (1983), the Shanghai Stadium, and the East Asia Tower (1997) have long been used to host top-level sporting events. They were built one after another. They reflect important memories of the sports development of Shanghai and even China, and have become undeniable landmarks of Shanghai's sports culture. The project's vision is to transform this area into a new, open and vibrant urban space.
Based on the survey results, HPP proposes an overall planning concept of “1 axis, 2 blades, 1 loop.” The functions of the two major professional venues will be retained to form a “professional event axis,'' and the remaining site will serve as two major park sectors in the north and south, creating a lush and vibrant urban public space. In addition, loops are designed to organize the park. The outer running track integrates the urban environment, while the inner track surrounds and connects the main venue.
Functional Upgrades to Historic Buildings: Venue renovations upgrade and preserve the original architecture and structure. The interior spaces have been adaptively modified to meet the contemporary requirements of top-level events and their supporting spaces. The original design elements of the Shanghai Indoor Stadium have been preserved and integrated into the renovation. The structure was strengthened, the large stage inside the building was removed, and a new circular seating area with movable seats, a box area, and space for VIP services was created.
The renovated interior space allows for quick division and switching of venues. In addition to serving as the home stadium for the Shanghai basketball team, it will also be able to host a variety of commercial events. Once used for public swimming events and as a practice location for youth professionals and diving teams, the Shanghai Swimming Center has become the new civic water sports center after renovation. The original wall at the edge of the central swimming pool was removed and replaced with a full-height glass curtain wall to let in more sunlight. The renovation of East Asia Tower is inspired by the magnolia, the city flower of Shanghai, and the torch, the symbol of sports activities.
The new building of the sports complex: As a completely newly constructed building within the park, the sports complex is located on two basement levels and seamlessly blends into the park through its landscape architecture. With a total floor area of approximately 60,000 square meters, it will also serve as a subway connection, further improving public accessibility. The sports complex includes badminton, table tennis and tennis courts, and the outdoor area includes basketball and tennis courts. After renovation, Xujiahui Sports Park has become one of the most well-equipped sports and cultural public facilities in Shanghai.
