On Sunday, video surfaced that appeared to show 2015 NFL MVP Cam Newton getting into a scuffle during a 7-on-7 youth football tournament in Atlanta.
It appears to show Newton, wearing a custom hat, being shoved by three people near the top of a set of stairs before being pushed, shoved and grabbed towards a fence line. . The video is less than 30 seconds long at the We Ball Sports xdynastyU 7-on-7 tournament held at BEST Academy before an altercation is broken up by police officers and event security.
Newton, the No. 1 pick in the 2011 NFL Draft out of Auburn, does not appear to be throwing punches in the video and appears to be dodging three other players. One punch was thrown in Newton's direction, but it's unclear if it hit the former quarterback.
It is unclear what sparked the altercation.
Newton, an Atlanta native, founded the company in 2021 to focus on improving the soccer skills of young athletes by providing opportunities to compete at the highest level through 7-on-7 tournaments and other events, according to Newton's website. He runs the organization “C1N”. The website states that the organization's mission is to help young athletes achieve their goals in soccer and life by creating an environment that fosters growth and development on and off the field.
C1N plays in tournaments across the country.
According to Newton's post on X, Newton's under-15 team won the tournament.
Attempts by The Associated Press to contact Newton's representatives Sunday night were unsuccessful.
Newton has not played in the NFL since 2021, when he spent part of the season with the Carolina Panthers, the same team that drafted him.
Newton spent 11 seasons in the NFL, throwing for more than 32,000 yards and 194 touchdowns. He scored 75 TDs with the Panthers and New England Patriots.
