MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — USA Health's Family Medicine Obstetrics Fellowship has partnered with Andalusia Health to provide care to patients and help early-career physicians gain more experience, according to a USA Health news release. did.
Covington County patients can now receive care after Monroe County Hospital's labor and delivery department closes in November 2023.
The fellowship is a one-year program that provides care to rural Alabama residents who have little or no access to prenatal care, according to the announcement.
“In rural areas, physicians are required to be able to treat a wide range of patients, and they typically work with subspecialists who refer patients,” said Vicki Demers, BS, MBA, MHA, CPPS, CEO of Andalusia. The program will provide trainees with a “customized and comprehensive educational experience,” according to the release. Two fellows are accepted each year from nationally accredited family medicine training programs.
The fellows will work with local healthcare workers in the obstetrics departments of Andalusia Health clinics and hospitals.
