Coursera, one of the world's largest online learning platforms, said the number of people taking its courses in Vietnam has quadrupled since 2020 to more than 1.4 million.
The average age of participants is 29, a spokesman for the US company said last Saturday.
The top five courses chosen by Vietnamese in the first quarter of this year are data, project management, information and digital technology, problem-solving skills, digital marketing and e-commerce.
Three of them are provided free of charge by Google, and the remaining two are provided by the University of Sydney in Australia.
Coursera CEO Jeff Majoncalda said generative AI is an interesting topic for college students and faculty.
“Universities believe that equipping students with AI knowledge could give them better job opportunities.
“The number of Vietnamese enrolling in courses in this field is on the rise.
“A Coursera survey last year found that employers in Asia Pacific are willing to pay up to 54% more for talent with AI knowledge.”
Vietnamese students have become accustomed to online learning amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Ministry of Education and Training has allowed universities to teach up to 30% of their programs online.
Even after the pandemic, many universities continue to offer between 1% and 25% of their course content online.
Currently, some Coursera courses can be converted into university credits in Vietnam.
For example, FPT University integrates over 80 specializations into its bachelor’s degree in information technology and business, with around 20% transferable credits.
Founded in 2012, Coursera offers online courses in partnership with over 300 universities and leading companies around the world.
The number of learners exceeds 148 million.
