Before Monday, Bullitt County was the largest county in Kentucky without an inpatient hospital.
BULLITT COUNTY, Ky. — UofL Health on Monday opened a new hospital in one of Kentucky's most populous and underserved areas.
university health – South Hospital is located at 1903 Hebron Lane in Bullitt County, Kentucky. Bullitt County is Kentucky's 10th most populous county and was previously the largest county without an inpatient hospital.
Prior to the 10 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony, residents were invited to a community breakfast and open house. The hospital will begin accepting its first inpatients Monday afternoon.
The $78 million facility has 40 inpatient beds and space for 20 more beds. The hospital has a 10-bed intensive care unit, a state-of-the-art pharmacy, laboratory, sterile processing area, and increased operating rooms for inpatient and outpatient procedures.
The hospital also has enhanced cardiac care services, including a cardiac and vascular catheterization laboratory and STEMI network for rapid treatment of acute heart attacks, and a “fast track” area for faster treatment and discharge. It also provides expanded emergency response capacity and expanded cardiopulmonary services.
“Today is a great day, a great day for us, and a great day for Bullitt County,” said Dorie Shelburne, CEO of UofL Health – South Hospital. “As UofL Health, we are committed to providing access to underserved communities. Bullitt County is the largest county in the state without a hospital, or inpatient hospital. of patients have to travel outside the region. Nowadays, we can provide and receive inpatient care, but today that all changes.”
University officials said the hospital will officially open on Monday, but the emergency department will remain open during construction.
