Brazilian Igor Severino was disqualified from UFC Fight Night in Las Vegas after biting Andre Lima's arm during a flyweight bout.
Severino, 20, bit Lima's bicep while standing in a clinch against the cage in the second round.
Referee Chris Tognoni stopped the match and the incident was reviewed before the victory was awarded to Lima of Brazil.
Severino was reportedly released from the UFC by president Dana White.
“Those were two up-and-coming, undefeated fighters,” White told journalist Kevin Iall., external
“If you get frustrated and want to get out of a fight, there are many ways to do it, but the worst thing you can do is bite your opponent.
“Now he's going to be cut and lose the biggest opportunity of his life. Needless to say, he's going to be in big trouble with the NSAC (Nevada State Athletic Commission).”
Lima, 25, then posted a photo of himself with a tattoo of the bite mark, after which White said he would double his match bonus to $50,000 (£40,000).
After the fight, in the Octagon, Lima said: “I was able to hit him hard, but when I tried to knock him down he bit me, so I screamed,” he said.
In the main event, former American strawweight champion Rose Namajunas defeated Brazil's Amanda Rivas by unanimous decision in a flyweight showdown.
On the undercard, British heavyweight Mick Parkin defeated Nigeria's Mohamed Usman, the younger brother of former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, by unanimous decision.
