The US Department of Energy (DOE) has agreed to stop collecting data on energy usage by crypto mining companies.
In a new court filing, the Energy Information Administration (EIA), which tracks DOE statistics, says it will not only stop collecting data, but also update information it has already collected and will receive as a result of its investigations. He said he would destroy everything.
“The Defendant agrees to destroy information already received by EIA in response to the EIA-862 emergency investigation.
EIA-862 If EIA receives additional information in response to an emergency investigation, EIA will discard that data. EIA will sequester and keep confidential information received or to be received in response to an EIA-862 emergency investigation until it is destroyed. ”
Officials see the agreement as a compromise that leaves no room for wrongdoing.
EIA agreed to suspend energy data collection late last month following a lawsuit by crypto mining company Riot and the Texas Blockchain Council (TBC).
According to the plaintiffs, the EIA attempted to force them and other mining companies to complete energy consumption surveys by threatening criminal and civil penalties if they did not comply.
As stated in the complaint,
“[The] EIA continues to gather information and, under open threat of criminal and civil penalties, compels certain companies, including Riot and many other TBC members, to respond to the survey no later than February 23, 2024. requesting. ”
The study was first proposed in early February as a way to investigate the energy impact of mining cryptocurrencies.
