Rep. Lauren Boebert's son, Tyler, said in court Thursday that he cannot afford a lawyer to represent him.
Tyler Boebert was taken into custody at the Rifle Police Department in February “after a series of recent vehicle break-ins and thefts of property” in the town. He was initially charged with 22 charges, including several felonies for criminal possession of identification documents. Eight charges have since been dropped.
“We're trying to get a lawyer, but it's kind of difficult because of the cost,” Tyler said at the Garfield County Courthouse on April 11, according to Denver outlet Westword.
“Worst case scenario, if I can't work something out with my attorney, I'm going to apply for a public defender or whatever is most convenient for me,” he continued.
“I always think it's a good idea to do both, because if you're eligible, you have a choice,” said Ninth Judicial District Judge John F. Neily. “We can give it some time so we can get things down.” Tyler.
Representatives for Rep. Boebert declined Westword's request for comment when asked if she supported paying Tyler's legal costs.
Tyler's legal troubles come at a trying time for his mother, who is facing a fierce re-election campaign. This teenager also became a father last year after getting his girlfriend pregnant.
After Boebert finalized her divorce from ex-husband Jason in October, she announced in December that she would change her congressional district, moving from the state's 3rd District to the more conservative 4th District.
The redistricting hasn't had a significant impact on Boebert in the polls. The Denver Post reported in January that Boebert finished fifth among Republican candidates in the 4th District, according to a straw poll of just over 100 Republicans.
Boebert said of her son in February: “I love my son Tyler. He has overcome some very difficult and public challenges for a young man and has become the center of attention he never wanted.” he said about his son.
“As an adult and a father, Tyler should take responsibility for his actions and be accountable for his poor decisions just like any other citizen,” she continued.
Boebert's representatives did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment outside of normal business hours.
