EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Texas Tech University El Paso is holding a commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 4, for the newest graduates of the Hunt School of Nursing and Francis School of Biomedical Sciences in the field of health care.
The Hunt School of Nursing ceremony began at 9:30 a.m. at the Starlight Event Center, 6650 Continental Drive.
The Francis School of Biomedical Sciences ceremony is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at Texas Tech Health El Paso's Medical Sciences Building II, 137 Rick Francis St.
“Known for innovative teaching, the university has specifically addressed the acute nursing shortage in the Borderplex. Approximately 90% of nursing school graduates choose to remain in the region and practice after completing their education. “Texas TechHealth, the cornerstone of social mobility in El Paso, has an annual economic impact of $634 million, supporting its role as a leading transformational entity,” said a press release sent by TTUHSC. Hunt School of Nursing:
- Just before National Nurses Week, which runs from May 6 to May 12, this graduation ceremony celebrates 72 students who earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.
- School Dean Stephanie L. Woods, RN, PhD, who also serves as chair of the school's Hunt Endowed Chair in Nursing, will be this year's keynote speaker.
- Pat Gordon, an El Paso native and member of the TTU System's board of directors, will speak. He serves as vice chair of the Academic, Clinical and Student Affairs Committee and is a member of the Regents Rules Review Committee.
- The school has the only accelerated program in the area that allows students to earn a BSN in just 16 months.
- Since 2012, the school has graduated 1,347 nurses.
Francis College of Medicine Graduate School
- The school will recognize 29 students who have shown “extraordinary dedication” to biomedical research and the advancement of science. This cohort includes 20 master's degree students and 9 bachelor's degree students.
- Dr. Diego Pedrosa will be the keynote speaker at this year's ceremony. He is a graduate of the Francis School of Biomedical Sciences.
- Regent Gordon also plans to deliver a message to the graduates.
