Trabzonspor fans attack Fenerbahce players after Turkish Super Lig defeat

After Sunday's Super Lig match, Trabzonspor fans ran onto the field and attacked Fenerbahce players.

Bright Ossai-Samuel and Michy Batshuayi from Fenerbahce tried to intervene when security forces entered the scene.

Turkish Interior Minister Ali Erikaya said: “It is never acceptable for violence to occur on a football field. Above all, sport is about gentlemen.”

“An investigation was immediately launched to identify the spectators who entered the pitch and to investigate the incident that occurred at the end of the match,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

FIFA president Gianni Infantino said the incident was “absolutely unacceptable”.

“We've said it before and we'll say it again: Without exception in football, all players must feel safe and secure in order to play a game that brings so much joy to so many people around the world. No,” he said.

“We call on the relevant authorities to ensure that this is respected at all levels and that the perpetrators of the shocking events in Trabzon are held accountable for their actions.”

In the 87th minute, after Batshuayi scored what would become the winning goal for the away team, tensions began to rise as objects were thrown onto the field.

Ossai-Samuel, the Nigerian winger who previously played for Blackpool and Queens Park Rangers, smashed one intruder to the ground as players swarmed by opposition fans, while former Chelsea forward Batshuayi struck another. I aimed a kick at the ball.

The Turkish Football Federation said in a statement that the incidents were “unacceptable” and that “those responsible for these incidents will be subject to the necessary criminal sanctions.”

This is the latest in a series of controversial incidents in the Turkish league during the 2023-24 season.

Fenerbahce are in second place in the Super Lig, two points behind leaders Galatasaray, and 30 points behind third-place Trabzonspor.
