The Witnessing Tool performance in 2024 is a thought-provoking and highly engaging experience. This band's discography is insurmountable when compared to the majority of modern rock artists, and watching their setlist unravel throughout the night is always pure adrenal excitement. Coupled with the huge visuals from their stage production and the fact that TOOL remains one of the tightest-sounding bands in the industry, you'll be the first to fall in love with this band's hypnotic, transcendental appeal. It's impossible not to get addicted to it.
Having had the opportunity to see their second night performance at LA's Crypto.com Center, it's safe to say that TOOL continues to put on one of the best live rock shows in the industry . Having said that, I consider myself a fan of his TOOL, but looking at his TOOL in 2024, it seems like the band is becoming a little more complacent and less willing to take risks. I feel it. From their almost “safe” setlist choices to their outdated and counterintuitive phone policy, these habitual tendencies of Tool begin to seep through their more seductive nature.
But it's completely unfair to mention these criticisms without first acknowledging how great a live performance TOOL was. Having seen the band many times over the past decade, it's hard to find a contradiction between their dedication to their music in the studio and on stage. The band's setlist consisted of many songs from their 2019 LP scary vaccinationthere are also some welcome deep cuts from the band's early recordings.
I saw them in the first leg of scary vaccination On the 2019 tour, many of the 2024 setlists will be scary vaccination trip. “Descending,” “Invincible,” “Pneuma” and, of course, the powerful opener “Fear Inoculum” were all a treat to see performed live again. In fact, it's always refreshing to see how well these epic songs work in a live setting, and the audience reaction certainly reflected that.
Fear Inoculum's songs were generally a success, if a little too extravagant at times, but the deep cuts they played were really great, if only a few. “Flood,” “Sweat,” and “Rosetta Stoned” were definitely the highlights of the night, and even though “Flood” and “Sweat” are over 30 years old, TOOL performed them perfectly. succeeded in. Maynards' vocals in particular were exceptional on “Sweat,'' and Danny Carey's drumming on “Rosetta Stoned'' was mind-blowing, not to mention the majestic 15-minute drum solo after the band break.
With the exception of “Flood,” which hadn't been played in years, TOOL's set overall felt a little safe.under consideration scary vaccination was released nearly five years ago, and TOOL's continued focus on this album couldn't help but feel a little redundant. Even though these songs work very well in the band's live set, scary vaccination Given its epic length, the song can sometimes sound overly extravagant. This is especially true when the majority of the setlist is built around these songs, leaving little room to explore other albums or fan favorites. There is a balance to be struck when creating a TOOL setlist, and there is certainly no universally “perfect” TOOL setlist that will harmonize with bands and fans. And that's largely part of the beauty and excitement of her TOOL show, where the direction of the set list can provide a vastly different experience.
As for its own quality, since the early '90s, TOOL has prohibited any audio or video recordings of its programming. Relevant to modern times, TOOL's focus on this is to draw the audience into a meditative state of music and limit distractions for the audience. It's a perfectly understandable protocol and definitely complements TOOL's music and its aesthetic.
However, despite the policy's aim to limit distractions, the act of security officials constantly blinding entire sections with military-grade flashlights to keep cell phone users away is a serious threat to any smartphone. It's far more distracting than that. For the first 30 minutes of TOOL's set, guards were rapidly shining flashlights onto several sections of the surrounding area, like spotlights searching for escaped prisoners. This was a persistent issue, at least for the first half of the show, and I couldn't help but feel ironic about the enforcement of this policy. This may be an individual issue depending on the venue and staff as well, but if you really want your audience to enjoy the moment, you might want to reconsider better enforcement of this policy. Alternatively, it may be in TOOL's best interest to revisit an entirely new policy.
Despite these fairly minor criticisms, it's hard to name another band that truly embraces the power of raw, heavy, unfiltered music like TOOL. At a time when organic music is less visible on the surface of pop culture, TOOL remains committed to creating art and experiences that are solely for our interests as artists. I have put that into practice. While remaining relevant to today's scene. Regardless of whether new TOOL music emerges in the next decade, TOOL will always remain kings of their craft and true wonders of rock music.
