North Carolina State College of Education welcomed more than 290 new graduates at its Spring 2024 Commencement Ceremony on May 3, 2024. Below is a summary of the event.
Number of graduates: On May 3rd, 291 students graduated from the Faculty of Education, including 44 doctoral students, 134 master's students, and 113 undergraduate students.
Burden on graduate students
Sherrell Lawrence received her Ed.D. In the field of community college leadership, she shares how she faced barriers as a pioneer, being the first in her family to earn an advanced degree, and inspiring graduate students with a pioneering spirit. I encouraged them to keep going. I'll do my best.
She also reminded the graduates that while all of them have overcome obstacles at some point in their academic careers, their success is because “our educational path knows no boundaries.” It reminded me.
“I encourage you to never underestimate the impact you can have on the lives of others through the power of education. “Take the lessons that state universities can teach you,” she said.
Undergraduate student burden
Matti Grossman, who earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics education, spoke to undergraduate students about his personal journey to earning his degree.
Grossman talked about how difficult her high school years and first foray into college were as she struggled to feel like she belonged. But those within the Faculty of Education made him feel welcome and valued through a kinder pedagogy. He encouraged graduates to take that pedagogy with them into their own classrooms in the future.
“As alumni of North Carolina State College of Education, we know the power of a supportive community, the power of a kinder pedagogy,” he said. “Once we cross this line and become experts in our field, it becomes our job to let the people in our community know that we belong. Next year, I hope to meet all of my students with a smile on my face. Let's learn their stories, their fears, their quirks, and celebrate them.”
Greetings from Dean Paola Stein
Dean Paola Stein encouraged the crowd in attendance, especially those experiencing graduation for the first time, to celebrate this year's graduates. At the height of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic in the spring of 2020, some students had their high school graduation ceremonies canceled.
As she welcomed this new group of educators to the field, she also took time to talk about the educators who have helped them along their journey and the impact all educators can have.
“None of us would exist without educators: teachers, instructors, administrators, counselors, advisors, instructional designers, researchers, and other education professionals.
As our educators, you have one of the toughest jobs in the world. But you also have one of the most important jobs. let's meet. we respect you we value you. ”
