The Black Diamonds Academic Success Program is for students in grades 9 through 12 and includes students of all academic levels, from high achievers to those at risk of dropping out. The program works with students, parents, and school districts to effectively engage students to help them take ownership and internalize the belief that they can and will succeed academically. I'm working on that.
Martin McDonald, a longtime Peekskill resident, launched Black Diamonds Success Academy in 2018. MacDonald strongly believes that “if students don't see themselves in the big picture of their education, they won't be motivated to do their best.” That was one of his main reasons why he helped launch the program. He wanted to help young black and brown students see success stories and achieve that success for themselves. McDonald said: “Black Diamonds and the events it hosts not only help students see themselves in their learning, but also use their voices to speak up and become leaders. Students are confident students, and confident students are more likely to succeed. That confidence is what makes Black Diamond shine.”
Black Diamonds Success Academy focuses on three key areas to help students succeed. These are student attendance, homework, and behavior. Black Diamond Managing Director Martin McDonald explains: “This program focuses on the fundamental belief that students must attend school every day to be successful. Part of that success is directly related to homework and appropriate behavior. McDonald continued, “The Black Diamonds Academic Success Program helps students build character, emotional intelligence, personal independence, and enhance overall personal growth.” I did.
Since 2018, Black Diamonds Academic Success Academy has aimed to do just that. This program ensures that 100% of Black Diamond members graduate high school on time and are prepared for life after high school. Our graduates have gone on to prestigious schools such as Alfred University, Morgan State University, Manhattanville, Cazenovia College, Hampton University, Morrisville State University, SUNY Buffalo, SUNY Oswego, and the University at Buffalo.
