TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – A Topeka nonprofit is establishing a scholarship for future mental health professionals.
The Jones Project, in partnership with Advisors Excel and the Ellis Foundation, created the Jones Family Scholarship.
“The opportunity to do something truly unique that leaves a lasting impression on multiple communities is extremely rare,” said Damon Parker, executive director of the Jones Project. “This is one of those opportunities.”
Four Kansas high school students will be selected for scholarships to attend facilities across the state and pursue careers in mental health. It also includes a bonus for those who decide to practice in Kansas after earning their degree.
Parker expressed his excitement to be able to help increase access to mental health in Kansas.
“The Jones Project's original mission was to be the 'tip of the spear' in the conversation about teen mental health,” Parker said. “As I traveled across the state and met face-to-face with students, counselors, and community members, I saw firsthand how difficult it is to access mental health services in rural areas. Some students have to drive for more than two hours.
Parker said scholarship details will be announced soon.
