Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas has received the 2024 Peregrine Award for Trauma Innovation for software developed to check the accuracy of data collected in the hospital's trauma registry.
Created by Jacob Roden-Foreman, Trauma Research Coordinator at Texas Health Dallas, the Automated Trauma Data Error Detection software is highly customizable and automatically detects potential logic errors in data sets.
“A registry is only as good as the data it contains,” Roden-Forman said in a statement. He said the tool will verify the accuracy of the data collected.
The Peregrine Prize recognizes new ideas that lead to better care for injured patients.
More than 50 trauma centers from North America, South America, Europe, Africa and Asia submitted nominations for this year's awards, Peregrine Health Services and Trauma System News announced.
Texas Health Dallas announced the winner in the Level I and II Trauma Center category.
Texas Health Dallas has been designated a Level I Trauma Center beginning in 2022. Level I Trauma Centers strive to innovate and advance trauma care through research and quality improvement.
The importance of error-free trauma registration
At the Texas Health Center in Dallas, an average of about 250 data elements are entered into each trauma patient's registry record, Roden-Forman said. He said approximately 2,500 patients are treated at the trauma center annually.
“The trauma registry is truly the backbone of a trauma center because it allows for data-driven decision-making,” Roden-Forman said. “As a result, errors in registration records can impact multiple different projects, from quality improvement projects to injury prevention efforts.”
Trauma center registry data also impacts regional and national trauma systems through organizational performance measurement, public policy development and funding allocation benchmarking, Roden-Forman said.
The software has been in use at Texas Health Dallas since February 2022, with several updates, Roden-Forman added, and the tool was shared with Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth. He said plans are underway to do so.
Roden-Foreman plans to announce the software at an upcoming online awards event.
“It's always nice to have your work recognized,” Roden-Forman said. “Especially in research, it often takes 15 years or more for research results to change practice, if at all.”Knowing that the work I've done is valued by others It's very rewarding.”
