Temu was one of the fastest growing large websites in the US last year, according to new analysis from Simplyweb.
Chinese e-commerce giant Pinduoduo Holdings' shopping site saw web and mobile traffic increase by more than 700% year-over-year, reaching an average of 92.2 million monthly visitors.
Considering only websites with more than 10 million monthly visits, Temu ranks second behind OpenAI, with traffic increasing by 2,690% in 2023 as AI explodes into the mainstream.
“There's a recognition that if you're already running a large website, it's hard to generate significant growth,” David Carr, senior insights manager at Similarweb, told Business Insider. “But Tem almost came out of nowhere.”

Temu has spent heavily on advertising to gain a foothold with U.S. shoppers. According to MediaRadar, Temu's ad spend increased 1,000% from January 2023 to November 2023.ad intelligence company told Modern Retail Temu spent an estimated $517 million on U.S. advertising from September to December 2023. 76% of the budget was spent on social media advertising. Tem also plans to run a Super Bowl ad for the second year in a row.
Temu wasn't the only site with Chinese roots to score highly on Similarweb's rankings. His online marketplace, AliExpress, owned by Alibaba, came in third place behind Temu with a year-over-year traffic increase of 290%. AliExpress was launched in his 2010, but as of 2023 it still had significantly less traffic than Temu, with an average monthly visit of around 24.2 million.
“Even though we're starting to think the market is relatively calm and stable, this significant growth is still possible,” Kerr said.
Shopify's Shop app landing page also performed well at #13 on Similarweb's list. In 2023, it had an average of more than 45.8 million visits per month, recording a year-on-year growth of 124.4%. website, shop app, Users can search for products from millions of sellers on Shopify. This particular Similarweb analysis doesn't account for app usage, so this number may also reflect users who visited your landing page before ultimately deciding to download the Shops app.
Meanwhile, Shopify's homepage receives 35.3 million visits per month, according to Similarweb.
In addition to commerce, security and privacy were also common themes in Similarweb's listings. Many ad blockers did well, as did Proton and Duo Security.
