BEL PRE — Christopher Copen, a junior at the Washington County Career Center, wants to help future patients overcome their injuries and get back on their feet.
Copen studies exercise science and sports medicine. He decided on his major after visiting schools many times.
“I came on a school trip when I was in fifth grade.'' He said. “I was planning to visit when I was in eighth grade, but that was the year after COVID-19. I came back as a sophomore and thought, 'Yeah.' This is what I want to do. ”
Passion for sports is a family affair. His mother, Lauren, is a certified athletic trainer and teaches the exercise science program at Career Center.
“She's been teaching here for 13 years. It really helped that she taught me what my mom taught me.” He said.
Copen said he has always benefited from Lauren's orthopedic knowledge.
“She explained to me what would happen if my brother or I were injured while playing sports. She taught us what we needed to do to improve the situation. He gave it to me.” He said.
Copen said he has been involved in sports most of his life, which influenced his career choice.
“I've always been close to sports, so I wanted to stay there. When I graduate, I want to pursue track and field.” He said.
Copen said she also wants to interact with people and help them overcome their injuries. He said taking courses in exercise science and sports medicine will get him closer to his goals.
“It's really beneficial for me. I get college credit, which helps me later in life.” He said.
He also enjoys the hands-on nature of the program.
“Everyone helps everyone. If you don't understand something, others will step in and help you.” He said.
Students divide their time between laboratory time and classroom lectures. They take regular online exams and final exams.
“We play a lot of review games to study.'' Copen said. “It's fun and educational, so it's very useful.”
Copen said he also enjoys watching his athletic progress. Students will be tested on grip strength, vertical jump, long jump, and pull-ups.
Copen also plays sports at Belpre High School.
“Currently playing basketball, I plan to start playing baseball in the spring.'' He said.
Copen said he likes both sports, but really loves baseball.
“I like the flow of the game and I like using my whole body.” He said.
He has been playing baseball since he was 5 years old, and this year will be his third year at Belpre.
