MARKETS, Mich. (WLUC) – Superior Health Foundation hosted its Spring 2024 Grants Celebration.
The Superior Health Foundation awarded more than $200,000 in grants to health-focused organizations Wednesday night.
Negaunee Public Schools Garden Project Chair Sarah Weaver said one of the grants will fund the Lakeview School Garden Growing Gardeners Project.
“We will create a healing garden within a garden. We will create a student learning area where classrooms can step out into the garden and receive instruction,” Weaver said. “We'll be attending the Negaunee Farmers Market this summer. And then we'll finish it off with the Fall Harvest Festival.”
Weaver said the garden received an $8,500 grant. She said children become more grounded when they have a chance to actually practice gardening.
“We can teach them what happens when you plant a seed, that plants grow, and that they can grow their own food, teamwork and collaboration,” Weaver added. “So there's no limit to what they're learning.”
Superior Health Foundation Executive Director Jim LaJoie said the event is an opportunity to give back in a way that aligns with the organization's goals.
“We do a lot of indigent care grants to provide funding to underprivileged people who don’t have access to care,” Rajoy said. “We are giving grants to Great Lakes Restoration Center, Cancer Care in Marquette County.”
Rajoy said she has been involved in the Superior Health Foundation's grant celebrations for 11 years. He said this will be his last job as executive director as he is retiring next week.
“We started this. We put this together. I've been through a lot with this organization, and it's been really great,” Rajoy said. “It was the highlight of my career. I loved every minute of it.”
LaJoie said the Superior Health Foundation has awarded more than $6 million in grants since 2012.
