MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – A Sun Prairie-based community health worker (CHW) was recently featured in a statewide campaign to shine a light on CHWs.
Dareon Steward is a trusted advisor known throughout the region when it comes to health and community resources.
CHWs help connect people to health care and social services based on their individual needs.
“CHWs are heroes and are the ones who are there to help you stay encouraged and be the air under their wings. We're trying to let them know that we're with them and that we're going to work together,” Steward said.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS), CHWs are employed by community-based organizations, local health departments, schools, and clinics throughout Wisconsin. Many health agencies in Wisconsin are working with community partners to help support her CHW services.
Steward works in the City of Sun Prairie Neighborhood Navigator Program, one of many CHWs across Wisconsin featured in a new video from DHS. These videos are part of a campaign to raise awareness about CHWs and their work, which will run until August 2024.
“I think the main thing that I want people to know about community health workers and the work we do is that we often reflect what we don't have in our own environments. '' Steward said. “So we take it and we pass it on to others. We see people on the other side of America, people who are forgotten, people who are being judged without knowing what their struggle is.” We work with people.”
