BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – No matter what happens at this week's state tournament, this will be Century senior forward Ben LaDuke's last kick as a high school hockey player.
“I think for us seniors, we just have a sense of crisis right now. Of course, it's playoff hockey so you don't know what's going to happen, so we're playing every game like it's our last game.” I'm there, but right now I'm just playing as hard as I can,” LaDuke said.
“I think there's a time when kids realize, “This might be the end of their high school career.'' Most kids get through it, but some kids have a difficult time. It depends on the timing and what time of year it is. Ultimately, I think there's more of a sense of urgency from our seniors to finish well,” Century head coach Troy Olson said. .
As is the case with most young hockey players, LaDuke's skills really developed during his high school years. One of the distinguishing characteristics is his speed.
“Well, Ben is incredibly fast. He's really fun to watch on the ice, and I think over the last few years he's been able to use his speed a little bit. I think we have to adjust and play our game differently and be smart about when and where to accelerate and put the puck in the net,” Olson said.
“It's very helpful. When he drives the net, you just go to the net and the puck is there for you. He's always moving forward,” Century senior forward Dawson Lentz said. Ta.
“As a player, I like to play fast and I like to be physical. You know, I usually like to get the players moving and get them in shape to give the team momentum. ” LaDuke said.
Speed will be key if the Patriots compete against teams in the East.
“We know we can use our speed. A lot of us have learned over the last few years how to use our speed and know that we can beat guys wide and put the puck in the net. It separates us from a lot of teams in the West,” LaDuke said.
LaDuke has 14 goals and 20 assists for 34 points so far this season.
The Patriots will play Grand Forks-Red River in their first game at state tomorrow.
