CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Sports fans across North Carolina will have their first chance to legally place bets on Monday.
The legal announcement will be officially made at noon. At that point, anyone over the age of 21 who is registered at a licensed sportsbook can start placing bets.
As of Monday, 8 sportsbooks licensed, the State Lottery Commission said nine other people have applied and more applications are expected to be approved in the future. Fans can now begin registering at licensed sportsbooks on March 1st.
You can bet on professional or college contests and include everything from Carolina Panthers games to the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Betting on horse racing has not yet been approved by state authorities.
State leaders said revenue from sports betting will be used for a variety of purposes, including giving back to the state's universities and professional teams. The money will be used for things like sports equipment and facility renovations.
“For a small market team like us, this is another opportunity to generate some revenue to compete, and for our entire state, we have a lot of opportunities to make mistakes,” said Fred, a former Charlotte Hornets president and vice president. “We want to compete on a level playing field for all other teams.” Whitfield said.
$2 million each year is also earmarked for gambling and addiction treatment services.
Charles Line, a Charlotte therapist, said gambling addiction can start the same way as drugs and alcohol. Sometimes, once a person starts, they may have a hard time knowing when to stop. But he said it can be done safely as long as guardrails are in place.
“Set a budget and stick to it,” Rein says. “For example, if you're going to say, 'I'm not going to make more than $100 a week,' you need to be firm about that.”
Sportsbooks have also worked hard to keep bettors accountable.a fan duel A representative for the company, one of eight licensed sportsbooks in the state, said it has tools in place to help users stick to their budgets.
“We have provided many tools that our customers can use to manage their play,” said FanDuel's Lindsay Vellines. “These are things like deposit limits and wage limits, and we encourage everyone to consider how they can incorporate responsible gaming tools into their play.”
