The 128th Boston Marathon started Monday morning, with participants making the long journey from Hopkinton, Massachusetts to the finish line on Boston's Boylston Street.
In the elite men's group, Ethiopia's Sisai Lemma denied 35-year-old Evans Chebet a third consecutive title. The Kenyan was the fifth person to win three years in a row in the race's more than 125-year history.
Kenyan Helen Obiri defended her title against an elite women's field described by race organizers as “historically fast”.
CJ Albertson and Emma Bates finish first among Americans
At the 2024 Boston Marathon, CJ Albertson and Emma Bates were the top Americans in the men's and women's divisions, respectively.
Albertson finished with an unofficial time of 2:09.53, ahead of fellow American men Elkana Kibet and Ryan Eyler.
Bates, who actually led the women's race in the beginning and middle, led the American women with a time of 2:27.14, ahead of Sarah Hall (2:27.58) and Desiree Linden (2:28.27). was not far behind.
Helen Obiri wins Boston Marathon for second consecutive year
Kenya's Helen Obiri has won back-to-back matches.
The 34-year-old crossed the finish line in first place for the second year in a row. Obiri, who finished in an unofficial time of 2:22.37, broke away from a pack of nearly a dozen women and dominated the final straight through Brookline and down to Kenmore Square for the win.
Sharon Rokedi took second place and Edna Kiplagat took third place.
Sisai Lemma maintains surprising victory for men
Ethiopia's Sisai Lemma denied Evans Chebet a historic third straight victory in the elite men's division of the 2024 Boston Marathon with an unofficial time of 2:06.17. Chebet took third place.
This victory is Lema's first in Boston. The 33-year-old has previously won at the 2021 London Games and the 2023 Valencia Games.
Lema, who finished 30th at last year's Boston Games, was less than four minutes away from the course record set by Kenya's Geoffrey Mutai in 2011 (2:03:02).
Rainbow Cooper wins the women's wheelchair race
Rainbow Cooper, a 22-year-old from the UK, was the first to cross the finish line in the women's wheelchair category in just her second Boston Marathon with an unofficial time of 1 hour 35 minutes 11 seconds.
This race was the second victory in the 2024 Boston Marathon, with Marcel Hug winning the men's wheelchair division with a course record time of 1 hour 15 minutes 32 seconds.
The elite men are expected to finish around 11:38 a.m. ET, with the first women to finish about 45 minutes later.
Marcel Hug defends the men's wheelchair and breaks his own course record
Marcel Hug has done it again.
“Silver Bullet,” as he is nicknamed for his trademark silver helmet, broke his own course record and defended his Boston Marathon men's wheelchair title with an unofficial time of 1 hour, 15 minutes, 32 seconds. The win marks his seventh Patriots Day win.
Puffer broke the course record by one minute during his 2023 win and improved it by another 30 seconds on Monday.
Elite men and women run
A group of elite men and women are passing through Hopkinton, the first leg of a long journey across the Commonwealth.
American Emma Bates took the lead from the start in the women's race, while Ethiopian Sisai Lemma took the lead in the men's race.
The leader of the men's group is expected to cross the finish line around 11:38 a.m. ET, and the first finisher of the women's group should be at the finish line by noon.

What is Patriots Day?
Patriot Day is a state holiday in Massachusetts that commemorates the start of the Revolutionary War. Held on the third Monday of April each year, the same day as the Boston Marathon.
MLB also schedules a Boston Red Sox morning game every Patriots Day during which the Boston Marathon will be held less than a mile from Fenway Park. The Red Sox and Cleveland Guardians are scheduled to throw the first pitch on Monday at 11:10 a.m. ET.
