The Alabama Senate passed Governor Ivey's education savings bill, the CHOOSE Act, on Wednesday. The bill first passed the Alabama House of Representatives on February 27, and Senate approval today cleared the way for the governor's signature. Governor Ivey issued the following statement:
“Today, we finally cleared the final hurdle in enacting Alabama’s historic education savings account plan with the Alabama Senate’s strong approval of the CHOOSE Act. Our state has a strong public education system. Every family in Alabama will soon have the right to choose their child's school. This monumental accomplishment is made possible by the unwavering support of Senate President Pro Tempore Greg Reed and Senator Arthur Orr. This would not have been possible without them. I am grateful for the efforts of them and our partners in the state legislature to maximize educational freedom in Alabama. Whether you're in school, private school, magnet school, charter school, or homeschool, we want everyone to have the opportunity to receive a quality education. We look forward to signing the CHOOSE Act into law.” – Governor Kay Ivey
“Today, Alabama is putting schoolchildren and their families first. Children are our future, and we want to make sure they have all the resources they need to succeed academically, regardless of their zip code. There is no greater responsibility for legislators than to ensure that our children achieve their dreams and reach their full potential, and the CHOOSE Act does so in a fiscally responsible manner. We offer this opportunity. We are proud of the investments we are making that will positively impact young students across Alabama.” – Senate President Pro Tempore Greg Reed
“It was an honor to work with Governor Ivey and his team to quickly pass school choice legislation, which he declared a top priority this legislative session. I believe we only want what's best for our schoolchildren and their families.'' – Sen. Arthur Orr
Governor Ivey is expected to sign the bill this morning.
