President Biden's administration announced more than $2 million in grants to the Hawaii State Department of Education (HIDOE) through the School Emergency Response to Violence Project (Project SERV). This grant is intended to help Maui recover from the devastating wildfires that occurred in August 2023. Project SERV, authorized by the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, provides short-term funding to schools affected by crises such as natural disasters to help restore safe learning environments.
“Too many communities across our country are reeling from too-frequent environmental disasters, and that loss and trauma is passed on to schools, educators, students, and families.Today's announcement President Biden and his entire administration are building on the work they have done to help the people of Maui affected by last summer's devastating wildfires and look forward to their recovery and bright future. It will provide much-needed support at times,” said Education Secretary Miguel Cardona. .
The grant will provide a variety of recovery and support services for 18 months, including mental health personnel, trauma recovery training, summer learning counselors, relief staff, student transportation funds, and support to local non-public schools.
