SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The newly formed Sex Education Advisory Committee met for the first time on Valentine's Day to bring back sex education and human growth development curriculum to Scottsdale schools.
The committee was established by the Scottsdale Unified School District Board of Supervisors and is comprised of 13 members from the community, including parents, nurses, teachers, and health care workers.
This group reviews, evaluates, and recommends quality and appropriate instructional resources for Board approval.
“There's been a lot of conversation from fifth-grade parents, nurses and other stakeholders who want this back,” said Scottsdale USD Associate Superintendent Karen Benson.
The district announced that sex education courses were canceled in 2020 due to the coronavirus.
The public will have two opportunities to comment on the recommendations, on April 9th and May 24th.
The board is scheduled to take a final vote on June 11.
Under Arizona law, this curriculum cannot be taught before fifth grade. Parents have the option to opt in or out of the approved curriculum.
