Two Dan River area schools were awarded elite honors Thursday by the Virginia State Board of Education.
Galileo Magnet High School in Danville and Stony Mill Elementary School in Pittsylvania County both received the 2023-24 School Board High Achievement Award.
The schools were two of 37 in the state highlighted for exceeding performance requirements set by the state board, according to a news release.
To earn this award, a school must receive a Level 1 performance rating in reading, math, and science, based on student pass rates for a particular school's so-called “all student” group and for each student group.
The same Level 1 performance is required in the areas of school quality indicators such as chronic absenteeism, graduation, and completion index.

“On behalf of the Virginia Board of Education, I am excited to celebrate and honor the 64 schools whose accomplishments have been recognized,” Board of Education President Grace Turner Creasey said in a statement. Galileo ranks in the top 40% of public high schools in the United States (1,787th out of 17,680 schools) and earns the title of “Best High School.”
Galileo was ranked 44th out of 322 high schools in Virginia.
“We are pleased to recognize and congratulate the 37 schools that received the Highest Achievement Award and the 27 schools that received the Continuous Improvement Award,” Virginia Superintendent of Public Instruction Lisa Coons said in a statement.
