Board of Education explores possibilities for art programs

At the Butler County School Board's recent meeting on April 18, several important items were discussed. One of the highlights of the meeting was Jill Marler's speech on implementing more arts programs within the Butler County school system.
Mahler, owner of Jill Mahler Creative and an advocate for the arts, emphasized the importance of incorporating the arts into the curriculum, especially through music and theater, without requiring additional funding or staffing.
“I'm reaching out to organizations like the Alabama Arts Alliance and the Expanded Learning Alliance to find out what programs are out there and what the needs are,” Mahler said. said. “I know these things take time, but I'm consulting with local schools to see what can be done. I'm just trying to be an advocate for the arts.”
During the meeting, the board took time to recognize outstanding accomplishments in sports and congratulate the Georgiana School boys basketball team for their impressive victory as state 1A champions. Kirk Norris was recognized as Alabama Coach of the Year, further highlighting the excellence of Georgiana's basketball program.
Additionally, the Greenville Parks and Recreation boys all-star basketball team was recognized for demonstrating the talent and dedication of Butler County's young athletes by winning the state championship.
The Board approved the February 2024 financial statements, cash balances and bank reconciliations. It also granted permission to bid on advertising for food for child nutrition programs and furniture for Georgiana school cafeterias.
Other items on the agenda included allowing the Child Nutrition Program to sponsor a summer lunch program, allowing board member Brandon Sellers to sign Greenville High School's Class of 2024 diploma, and rescheduling the May board meeting. .
The meeting ended with an executive session to discuss the student's disciplinary hearing.
