Don't blink, you'll miss a lot.
As the short and sweet spring sports season begins and April winds down into May, it's clear that Scarborough's athletes and teams are chasing June glory.
Familiar faces perform old tricks, and some newcomers also steal the show, which creates plenty of drama early on.
Let's look back at the past and look ahead to the future.
men's lacrosse
Scarborough's men's lacrosse team turned its season around with a big win last Friday at South Portland.
The Red Storm dropped their first three games this spring, losing to visiting Windham 8-6, Cape Elizabeth 12-3 and visiting Falmouth 12-4 before winning at Cheverus (12-3). I got it.
“Cape and Falmouth are really good teams, but I was mad at Windham,” senior goaltender Ben Carvel said. “We should have won that game, but we couldn't.”
“At that point (losing the first three games), I don't think we had the confidence to catch up,” Red Storm coach Zach Barrett said. “Our grades were pretty low and we knew we had a lot of work to do. We committed this week to working on a few things.”
Scarborough then made a statement against its neighbor and rival, winning a tense thriller.
The first period ended with both teams trading goals, including two goals from Wes Merrill, with the Red Storm leading 3-2. South Portland then scored its only three goals in the second quarter to take a 5-3 lead at the half.
The third period continued to be a back-and-forth affair as Merrill, Nick Harmon (remember that name), and Olin Pedersen scored back-to-back points to put the Red Storm back in the lead, but 55 seconds into the frame, the Red Storm scored. The Riots scored three goals of their own, taking an 8-6 advantage into the final period.
So Scarborough senior goaltender Ben Kerbel stood firm and didn't allow another run, and after Drew Witas scored to cut the deficit to one point, Pedersen tied it midway through the fourth inning.
Then, with 4:27 left, Harmon scored on a fortuitous bounce to put Scarborough ahead.
“I looked at Wes and he kind of looked at me and then the ball bounced off his stick and I caught it and took the shot and it went in.” Harmon said.
After Koelbel made three saves, the Red Storm was able to pull away for an emotional 9-8 victory.
“This was huge,” Carvel said. “We really needed a win. When we get one point in a game like this, I think it will help us in the future. We played great in the fourth quarter and did our job. We were nervous at the end.'' I trusted my defense and they put some good sticks in there. They took some shots, but no good shots, and we did. We got out of here unscathed, which is a great feeling.”
“This means a lot,” Harmon said. “They're a big rival. It feels good to beat them. We fought hard. We went down, we went up, we went down again. I was pretty nervous at the end, but I believed in our defense and we got it done. It feels good to get this. We just trusted each other and stayed in the process and got what we wanted.”
Merrill and Pedersen both had three goals, Harmon had two and Koerbel had 17 saves, many from close range.
“It was just a fun night,” Carvel said. “Sometimes you don't know, but whatever it was, it worked out. I was saving money. I got lucky with the pipes a few times.”
“Ben made some great saves and kept us in the game,” Harmon said.
“It was a close range shot and great timing,” Barrett added. “If they had scored, it might not have ended the same way. Ben just had a great game. He's a big part for us. He runs clear. You can't put a price on that. He was the biggest reason for this win.”
Scarborough hopes to reach .500 when it hosts rival Thornton Academy on Tuesday, then travels to Oak Hill on Friday and visits Portland next Monday.
“This gives us a lot of confidence,” Harmon said. “We're heading in the right direction. We're on track for the next game, but it's not going to get any easier.”
“This is exactly what we needed,” Carvel said. “It gives us confidence and courage. We're looking forward to the big game against TA on Tuesday.”
“We still have a lot of work to do, but everyone agrees,” Barrett added. “We're going to continue to work hard and try to get better. We hope to keep the train moving.”
