GENEVA — Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Commerce and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Competitiveness Centre (NCC), Dr Majid Al Qasabi, attended the 60th anniversary celebrations of the United Nations Organisation for Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva.
The event, themed “Charting new development paths in a changing world”, was attended by UN Secretary-General António Guterres and representatives from over 120 countries, including world leaders and ministers.
The sessions discussed key topics including industrial policies for trade and development, preparing for the future of the economy, development strategies amid the ongoing crisis, reshaping foreign direct investment and shaping a digital future that benefits people and the planet.
Al-Qasabi highlighted the role of e-commerce in Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 development strategy, noting that the sector is expected to grow to SR260 billion by 2025.
Last year, Saudi Arabia's delivery companies processed around 200 million orders with the help of 14,000 logistics warehouses across the country, and investment in new e-commerce businesses increased 152 percent in two years to reach SR1.6 billion.
He also discussed ongoing regulatory reforms to strengthen e-commerce operations, including the establishment of an E-Commerce Council to coordinate the efforts of 17 government agencies and the Saudi Economic and Business Center, which aims to improve the online business environment.
