Former co-CEO of Hackensack Meridian Health, an influential health care thought leader, military veteran, and a true gentleman to all who knew him. John Lloyd has passed away.
Lloyd was instrumental in the 2016 merger of Meridian Health and Hackensack University Health Network and served as co-CEO with Bob Garrett for the system's first two years.
Garrett praised Lloyd as an executive and a leader.
“John's legacy lives on in New Jersey and at Hackensack Meridian Health,” he said. “John was a wonderful person, well known within HMH as not only a visionary leader, but also someone who genuinely cared about each member of his team.”
Lloyd was known for giving his time and consideration to everyone who worked for him, always making it clear that he felt he was working alongside them as part of a team pursuing the greater good. I did.
“He brought his authentic self to work every day and dedicated his life to serving his team and patients,” Garrett said. “It was a privilege to work alongside him as co-CEO. Prior to serving as Co-CEO of HMH, Lloyd served as CEO and President of Meridian Health. Under his leadership, Meridian has consistently been recognized as one of the best health systems in New Jersey for clinical quality.
Meridian has been named one of America's 100 Best Companies to Work For six times by Fortune Magazine. We have also received numerous state and national awards for excellence in patient care and nursing, including being the first health system in the nation to receive Magnet designation for excellence in nursing from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
When Lloyd was appointed president of Jersey Shore Medical Center in 1982, the hospital was at a crossroads. Lloyd worked with physicians, board members, employees, and community leaders to quickly put the hospital on a path to success. Currently, Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center is one of the nation's leading independent academic medical centers.
In 1997, Mr. Lloyd led the merger of Jersey Shore and Ocean Medical Center and Riverview Medical Center to form Meridian Health. Eventually, Southern Ocean Medical Center, Bayshore Medical Center, Raritan Bay Medical Center and Old Bridge Medical Center also became part of Meridian Health.
Lloyd was instrumental in developing Meridian's Continuum of Care, providing access to care for the communities it serves. HMH's outpatient network is what it is today largely because of Lloyd's vision and leadership.
Lloyd graduated from Princeton University and proudly served in the Marine Corps before earning an MBA in Health Administration from Temple University.
Starting out as a management trainee at Episcopal Hospital in Philadelphia, Lloyd entered the healthcare industry in 1972 with a keen business sense, high energy, and an affable style that served him well throughout his career. .
Lloyd is a past recipient of the Medical Executive Award from the New Jersey Academy of Medicine and the Distinguished Business Leader Award from Monmouth University. Lloyd was recognized by the NJHA as Medical Professional of the Year.
He has been ranked as one of the most powerful healthcare leaders by ROI-NJ, listed as a “Nonprofit Hospital and Health System CEO You Should Know” by Becker’s, and received the Icon Award and the Maurice Pollack Award for Community Service by NJBIZ Did. Graduated from Monmouth University.
Mr. Lloyd also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the New Jersey American Healthcare Executives Association.
Most of all, he will be remembered as someone who deeply cared and cared for the employees he worked with and the patients they cared for.
