SHEPHERD — The Yellowstone region's final rallycross event for the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) 23-24 season was held Sunday, April 14 at Big Sky Speedway.
“Most of us drivers are too focused on which cone is coming next… we don't have time to focus on how we feel about it,” said Rallycross organizer and driver Matthew Boggio .
The group said entry-level motorsports are largely unknown in Montana.
“We drive (cars), we tear them down, we fix them, we drive them again,” rallycross driver Lauren Katzenberger said of the sport's low-traction mudslides.
The vehicles used are known as “hoopties,” and many are junk cars that drivers buy for sport for less than $1,000.
“They have body damage. It's a cheap thing that most people would consider a disposable car. For them, rallycross is the perfect venue because this is where they spend their last days. “Because you can do it,” Boggio said of the “difficulty.”
Rallycross driver Jessica Vetch took her 1993 Ford Probe to the final event of the season and took it around the dirt track.
“I'm always being told to lower the floor and make more power. I think I'm being a little too cautious,” Vetch said, adding that rallycross participants support drivers of all skill levels. Stated.
SCCA Group said it is recruiting participants to expand next year's rallycross event.
“We run when it's snowing, we run when it's muddy, we run when it's raining, we run even when it's dry like today. It doesn't matter, we intention Run the event,” Boggio said.
Yellowstone SCCA Region 108 plans to transition to autocross, a rallycross-like drift sport played on paved courses, for the summer of 2024.
