A historic bridge in Portland, Oregon, was closed Monday morning after a derailed train was seen leaning against the bridge's supports.
Two Union Pacific Line cars were completely derailed on the east side of the 100-year-old railroad bridge.
“One rail car is leaning against the bridge's structural support columns” Portland Fire Rescue listed in X. “The bridge has been closed and is now completely blocked to all train, vehicular and pedestrian traffic.”
The Portland Fire and Rescue Department said the bridge will remain closed until “its structural stability can be assessed.” No injuries were reported in the sinking, and no concerns regarding hazardous materials were reported.
“This will be a prolonged incident, but will be addressed in coordination with Union Pacific as a plan is developed to mitigate the derailment,” Portland Fire and Rescue said in a statement. Ta.
Union Pacific engineers were on the scene Monday morning and began assessing the bridge's structural stability, the Portland Fire Department said.

The derailment occurred after 35 rail cars derailed in New Mexico on Friday, and evacuations continued into Sunday.
According to BNSF Railway, six of the derailed cars were loaded with propane gas. No injuries were reported. The National Transportation Safety Board is scheduled to investigate.
