Law enforcement arrested about 35 people and secured campus buildings at California State Polytechnic State University's Humboldt campus in Northern California early Tuesday morning. The university recently decided to close for the remainder of the semester following an escalation of pro-Palestinian protests on campus.
At the time of the arrest, the university, known as Cal Poly Humboldt University, issued a shelter-in-place order for students living on campus and for those living off campus to stay off campus due to “ongoing criminal activity.” He was calling out to me.
Those arrested face a variety of charges, including unlawful assembly, vandalism, conspiracy and assault on a police officer, according to the latest information from the university. Additionally, the university said students may be subject to disciplinary action for conduct violations, while staff may be subject to disciplinary action.
“What was happening was neither freedom of expression nor protest,” the university wrote on its website. “This was a criminal act, and we had serious concerns about its further spread on campus.”
The campus closure will remain in place until May 10 as law enforcement continues to monitor the situation, the university said.
Cal Poly Humboldt President Tom Jackson Jr. said in a statement: “Today is a difficult day and my heart is broken to see this happen. We truly didn't want this to happen to anyone.” said. This line far exceeded the level of protest and placed the campus in continued danger. We commend the efforts of our law enforcement team to resolve this extremely dangerous situation. ”
