Explanation about “preventive chemotherapy”
Kate, Princess of Wales, said on Friday that she is in the early stages of “preventive chemotherapy” for cancer detected after abdominal surgery in January.
Kate did not say what type of cancer doctors found or how advanced it was. But cancer doctors say it's very common for prophylactic, or more specifically “adjuvant” chemotherapy, to be given after surgery in which cancer is found.
“It's almost like insurance,” says Dr. Andrea Selczek, a gastrointestinal oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. “The patient had surgery to remove all visible cancer. Why Kensington Palace waited to announce Duchess Kate's cancer news
NBC News' Molly Hunter details why Princess Kate may have waited so long to reveal that she was undergoing cancer treatment.
First, Duchess Kate announced in January that she was scheduled for major abdominal surgery, after which she would need time to recover.
Second, she is processing the news of her cancer diagnosis with her husband, Prince William, as the couple come to terms with what this means for the healthy 42-year-old.
And finally, and perhaps most importantly, Kate is waiting for the right moment to tell her young children about her situation, make them understand, and reassure them that they are and will be okay. Ta. Remarkably, Kate wanted her children to hear news from her rather than media reports and gossip.
