Penn State Health Children's Hospital is making specialized surgery more convenient for young patients and their families in Lancaster County and surrounding areas. Pediatric specialists from Children's Hospital's Departments of Plastic, Urologic, and Gastrointestinal Surgery are now performing non-emergency surgeries at Penn State Health Lancaster Medical Center.

Dr. Thomas Samson, chief surgeon at Children's Hospital, performed the first surgical procedure at Lancaster Medical Center on Cameron Gates, a longtime patient of the Lancaster Cleft Clinic, a partner of Penn State Health. Gates underwent rhinoplasty and lip refinishing surgery as part of his cleft palate treatment plan.
Pediatric surgical care provided at Lancaster Medical Center is consistent with the mission of the children's hospital based at Penn State Health's flagship Milton S. Hershey Medical Center campus in Hershey. Our care team is comprised of extensively trained pediatric specialists, including pediatric surgeons, pediatric anesthesiologists, and pediatric pre- and post-operative nurses.
“Our goal is to make pediatric expertise more easily available to more patients and families in the central Pennsylvania communities we serve.” Samson he said. “This is part of our long-term strategy to bring high-level services closer to where patients live.”
In addition to surgeries at Lancaster Medical Center, Samson and members of his team see patients for follow-up care at Penn State Health Children's Lancaster Pediatric Center. Lancaster Pediatric Center provides comprehensive, advanced pediatric care to the community in a purpose-built environment designed for children and teens, along with specialists supported by Children's Hospital.
