MIDDLETOWN, Pa. — Penn State Harrisburg, in collaboration with the Office of General Education and the Office of Planning, Evaluation, and Institutional Research (OPAIR), will host free in-person faculty-led workshops to strengthen general education assessment. doing. The workshop, scheduled for Monday, June 3, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Penn State's Harrisburg campus, will give faculty an opportunity to delve into the university's assessment approach and contribute to improvements in assessment materials and processes. “The City of Harrisburg is pleased to host this workshop for faculty who teach general education courses,” said Chancellor David Callejo Perez. “By supporting our faculty who teach these important courses, we reaffirm our commitment to preparing students for success in their careers and communities.”
Faculty who teach general education courses are encouraged to apply to participate in this workshop, which will explore how to align course assignments with Penn State's general education learning objectives, foundations, and disciplinary standards. . Space is limited and those who apply by May 20th will receive priority consideration. Workshops will be conducted in-person only, and participants from campuses other than Penn State Harrisburg will be reimbursed for mileage.
This workshop will include presentations, small group discussions, and hands-on activities, including one on Penn State's General Education Learning Objectives (GELO) and assessment process. In small group sessions, focus on specific objectives, brainstorm the relationship between learning and intent, and consider relevant rubrics. Participants analyze student sample work and update course assignments. Participants will be provided with resources and references to continue their professional development. Additionally, participants will receive priority consideration for future general education funding opportunities and professional development. The workshop will conclude with the sharing of examples and directions for future work to help teachers incorporate assessment strategies into their teaching practices.
