PENDER COUNTY — Agricultural research at Pender County High School has received a boost with a recent grant award.
Agricultural education programs will receive $100,000 as part of the 2023-2024 Agriculture Career Technical Education (CTE) grant.
“This grant means a fantastic opportunity for our students to immerse themselves in hands-on learning and further explore their passion for agriculture,” Principal Nick Puckett said in a press release from the PC School. “We are grateful for this support. It will definitely strengthen our agriculture program and benefit our students.”
Career Technical Education (CTE) Director Dominic Bates, CTE Teacher Thomas Herren, and Chief Financial Officer Lisa Nowlin secured the funding through a competitive process with 88 applicants.
Only 35 people were selected to receive a total of $5.8 million in funding.
According to a release from the school district, “This grant is in line with broader efforts by the North Carolina General Assembly to support agricultural education across the state. House Bill 259, Section 8.9, would increase the number of career and technical education programs in public schools. $2 million has been allocated for agricultural education programs in middle and high schools.”
