WATSONVILLE — A night of music, Mexican food, auction items and a celebration of education: The Pajaro Valley Educational Foundation will offer all of this when it hosts its Spring Fling fundraiser April 18 in Jalisco.
The Pajaro Valley Education Foundation was established in 2017 to provide funding for technology, engineering, math, arts, and science programs for all students in the Pajaro Valley Unified School District. It also provides professional learning opportunities for faculty and scholarships for students.
The evening includes an assorted dinner of chicken or cheese enchiladas, beans, and rice, folk music performances by Estrellas de Esperanza, led by Maestra Ruby Vasquez, and the New School Corridos Band, led by Juan Ospina, and a presentation of the Foundation. It will feature an award given to the winner of “My Life.” 10 Years” Student Art Contest asked students to create a vision of themselves in the future.
The dinner featured Nora Yelena from Raices y Cariño, who was recognized for her work in response to last year's Pajaro flood, and Gina from the Santa Cruz County Juvenile Probation Department, who was recognized for her work engaging youth through sports and mentoring.・Recipients of the second annual Community Hero Award, such as Mr. Castañeda, will also be honored.
Additionally, the event will feature a ribbon cutting celebrating the foundation's new Pajaro Valley Chamber of Commerce leadership and a silent auction where various items will be bid on. Only one item has been publicly announced so far: a 4-hour rental of a closed-deck double kayak in Elkhorn Swamp courtesy of Kayak Connection, but more items can be found on the foundation's Instagram page It will be posted to @pvedfoundation.
Another highlight this year is the Spring Fling Staff Spirit contest, where schools and departments receive specially priced tickets and assemble outfits that showcase their school or department. The winning group will win a catered dinner for staff the afternoon before this year's back-to-school night.
The event will be held at Jalisco's, 618 Main Street, Watsonville, on April 18th from 5-8 p.m. Tickets are priced between $33 and $40 and can be purchased at PVEFspringfling.eventbrite.com.
