- A 68-year-old retiree from Oregon learned he had won an $8.4 million lottery jackpot.
- The winning ticket had been drawn a month before he realized he had won.
- He said he plans to invest the money and has no plans for a major splurge.
A 68-year-old retiree from Milwaukee, Oregon, had been saving millions of dollars without knowing anything for almost a month before he finally checked his lottery ticket and learned the winning numbers.
Oregon Lottery officials say David Schultz was at a Safeway in Gladstone buying an Oregon Game Megabucks ticket for the Jan. 24 drawing.
But he wasn't able to check his ticket until Friday, realizing he had hit the jackpot and spent the rest of the weekend in shock.
Officials said he claimed his $8.4 million award on Monday.
The Safeway store where he bought his ticket also received an $84,000 bonus.
Schulze told officials that he doesn't buy lottery tickets often, but “if I win a big prize, I'll buy it just in case.''
He also said he has no plans to make any major purchases and plans to invest the majority of his funds.
Considering that many lottery winners spend all their winnings, it might be a good idea to invest.
