MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is encouraging anyone considering hunting for the first time in 2024 to enroll in a hunter education course now before courses start filling up in the spring. .
Those who complete hunter education courses play a critical role in keeping Wisconsin a safe place to hunt. Many of Wisconsin's hunting incidents involve hunters over the age of 40, decades after learning firearm safety rules in hunter education courses. For seasoned hunters, it may be time to revisit these valuable lessons.
As part of the program, Hunter Education graduates receive a certificate recognized in every state in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Unless hunting under the Instructional Hunting Act, anyone born after January 1, 1973 must have a Hunter Education Certificate to purchase a hunting license.

More than 20,000 people take hunter education courses in Wisconsin each year, so early registration is important for those interested in taking classes.
traditional course
Students participate in a multi-day, in-person course where they learn about hunter responsibility and safety through lectures, demonstrations, group discussions, hands-on exercises, and individual study. Students then take a multiple-choice exam and complete a hands-on, skills-based assessment based on information provided in the printed student manual and taught during class.
Internet + Field Day
Students must enroll in the in-person field day course and complete the online portion before attending the field day. Upon completing the online course, students receive a field day voucher. This voucher is required to attend the in-person field day course you have registered for. Students reinforce what they learn online with hands-on safe firearms handling and demonstrations by experienced hunters. and practical exercises. Students then take a multiple-choice exam and complete a practical skills-based assessment.
Online only (18+)
Online-only courses have the same general content as other course options, but are completely online. Students complete online units, take multiple-choice quizzes, and take a final multiple-choice exam. This course is specifically aimed at students with hunting or firearm handling experience. Applicable only to those over 18 years of age.
