JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Since 1984, thousands of people have shopped their way to NorthPark Mall, one of the only indoor shopping malls in the state.
General Manager Sean Cochran said: “This is definitely a momentous opportunity to reflect on all the memories and achievements and the rich tapestry of community connections that have been woven here over the decades. ” he said.
This year, we celebrate our 40th anniversary by welcoming friends and family to the dozens of retail locations that have sustained us over the years.
“It's been a great partnership. It's been an economic force for the city. And for the state of Mississippi, as I mentioned earlier, over $60 million in sales tax flows from this region into Mississippi every year. So , that was very important,” Ridgeland Mayor Gene McGee explained.
According to Capital One, an average of 1,170 shopping malls closed each year between 2017 and 2022. If that wasn't scary enough, by 2022 there will only be 700 large shopping malls left nationwide.
North Park is one of the few players who remains steadfast.
“It's a daily job: finding the right tenants, making sure we have the right services and amenities that they like, and always striving to keep it clean, fresh, and safe for everyone to enjoy.” “We do that,” Cochrane explained. “We are over 90% occupied and expect to have two new domestic tenants moving in within approximately 30 to 60 days. We plan to announce two more in the summer.”
To celebrate the past 40 years, the mall will host several events highlighting its history, including a fashion show by the original 1984 Gayfur Girls on September 13th.
“They held a fashion show every weekend and brought in guest models from every school across Mississippi. ” said local life and fashion stylist Darrell Wilson.
“Your unwavering support and enthusiasm are the foundation of NorthPark's success,” Cochran said.
Other events you can attend this year include:
- June 1st is “601 Day” to support local businesses opening stores at the mall.
- Celebrate America Balloon Glow on June 28 will feature food trucks, fireworks, bounce houses, live music and hot air balloons.
- NorthPark Mall's birthday celebration will take place on September 12th, with a historic landmark installed at the entrance.
- September 14th is Decade Day, where customers can shop wearing outfits from their favorite decade.
