Deworst, Minnesota — Nine people were killed Friday in a crash between a semi and a van on Interstate 95 in west-central Wisconsin.
The fatal crash happened on the highway near County Road J in Dewhurst Township, about 80 miles east of Eau Claire, according to the Clark County Sheriff's Office.
According to the sheriff's office, the van continued northbound on County Road and entered the intersection with Route 95. At that time, a semi traveling eastbound on the highway collided with the van.
Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers lamented the accident in a recent post about the X, thanking first responders and confirming nine deaths. The Wisconsin State Patrol is assisting with the investigation.
That section of Highway 95 was closed for several hours Friday, and motorists were asked to avoid the area.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation says eastbound cars should go from Fisher Avenue to Pinewood Road and then return to the freeway via Riveria Avenue.
Westbound motorists should take Riveria Avenue to Pineview Road and then take Fisher Avenue to access the freeway.
