Philadelphia Mayor Sherrell Parker on Monday nominated nine people to the city's Board of Education.
Parker's office noted in a statement about the announcement that the mayor has worked to bring in people from different places and with different backgrounds and skills to reflect his “One Philly vision.” .
“I am proud to announce the nine candidates for the Board of Education. I have committed to identifying a group with diverse skills from different regions, sectors and communities, some with deep knowledge and others with new ideas. I said I wanted a group that truly reflected my vision of a united city, One Philadelphia. , families, faculty and staff,” Mayor Parker said in a statement.
On Monday, Parker named:
- Sarah Ashley Andrews is a current member of the school board and a certified counselor.
- Crystal Cubbage is a Philadelphia native and the executive director of the Philadelphia Learning Cooperative.
- Cheryl Harper is a former Philadelphia teacher who has worked for the Philadelphia School District, Camden Public School District, and later the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
- Whitney Jones is the CFO of Children's Crisis Treatment Center, a mental and behavioral health nonprofit serving children and families.
- Chau Win Lam has been serving on the Philadelphia Board of Education since 2022.
- Wanda Novales is the senior pastor of City Reach Church.
- Joanne Stern is a former attorney who worked for the State of Pennsylvania, the City of Philadelphia, and the Philadelphia School District for more than 40 years.
- Reginald Streeter currently serves as president of the Philadelphia Board of Education.
- Joyce Wilkerson is a current member of the Board of Education and previously served as its chair.
Parker's nomination will be referred to City Council for advice and consent, his office said in a statement.
On Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at 1:00 p.m., Mayor Parker will discuss these candidates in a press conference with all nine candidates in attendance.
