Manager David Moyes told West Ham fans he was “really disappointed” after his side lost 5-0 to Chelsea.
West Ham have conceded five goals in each of their last two away games, losing 5-2 to Crystal Palace on April 21, and are almost certain to miss out on European competition for the fourth season in a row. .
They have won only one of their last eight Premier League games, losing four times, the last time drawing with Liverpool.
“The fans were great and I'm disappointed,” Moyes told Sky Sports.
“Normally teams don't get beaten like this, but they lack some elements of mental strength and leadership to get a better result, or at least not get beaten.
“The fans did their part, and all I can say is that I am truly sorry for this outcome.”
It is the latest difficulty in a difficult season for Moyes, who appears to be on his way out after West Ham held talks with former Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui earlier this week.
Moyes, 61, returned for a second time in charge of West Ham in December 2019 and has overseen a largely positive period in the club's history.
The Scot led the Hammers to the Europa League semi-finals in 2021-22 and also won the Europa Conference League in 2022-23, ending a 43-year wait for a major trophy.
However, with his current campaign not going well and widespread dissatisfaction among his fan base, it appears his days are numbered.
They have been forced to lose, with a huge 70 goals conceded, with only Burnley (74 goals conceded), Luton (78 goals conceded) and Sheffield United in the bottom three, all of whom have poor defensive performance. Inferior.
Coach Moyes said, “There were too many games this season where we didn't show toughness, unity and leadership, and we weren't able to take control of our performances.''
“I'm the coach so I take responsibility, but sometimes the players have to take responsibility too.”
