MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD) – Mayor Will Haney announced the proclamation of May as Mental Health Awareness Month for the Town of Mount Pleasant.
Officials said the declaration recognizes that mental health is critical to the well-being of people in our communities and calls for increased public awareness, reduced stigma and increased support for mental health. There is.
“The 2023 South Carolina Health Assessment Report ranks mental health among the top three health concerns reported by South Carolinians following the pandemic,” the press release states. “According to statistics provided by NAMI, 706,000 adults in South Carolina experience mental illness each year, which is more than five times the population of Charleston.”
The press release added that nearly half of individuals who require mental health services do not receive any treatment due to a lack of available health care providers or the high cost of treatment.
