Current physical activity guidelines for Americans from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services indicate that adults need 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity each week. But what is moderate-intensity physical activity?
According to the American Heart Association, moderate-intensity physical activity gets your heart pumping, but only about 1 in 5 adults and teens get enough exercise to stay healthy. . It may be because people have difficulty understanding what moderate-intensity activity is. Here are some examples of the types of activities that are considered moderate intensity.
• Walk very fast (about 4 miles per hour).
• General cleaning such as window cleaning, vacuuming, mopping, etc.
• Mowing the lawn with an electric lawn mower
• Ride your bike with light pressure (16-12 mph)
• Play recreational badminton
• play doubles tennis
• slow dance
• Basketball shoot
• Water aerobics
• play volleyball
• Authentic gardening
• Painting and decoration
Anything that doesn't increase your heart rate and breathing rate won't count as moderate-intensity activity in the recommended amount of activity. However, any exercise is better than no exercise at all. Doctors say it can still be beneficial as long as the activity counteracts prolonged sitting.
