McDaniel College has received approval from the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) to offer a new undergraduate major in early childhood education.
This new major, which begins in fall 2024, expands McDaniel's educational offerings to prepare undergraduates to teach infants, toddlers, and young children, a focus of Maryland's Blueprint for the Future.
McDaniel has been offering programs to train teachers and administrators for more than 110 years, and now offers programs for kindergarten through 12th grade in elementary education majors, as well as secondary education and specialty areas such as art, physical education, and Spanish. offers a minor. 20 graduate degrees and certificates. This new major provides a pathway for students pursuing a bachelor's degree and certification to teach pre-K to high school seniors.
The program is liberal arts-based and leverages existing coursework and expertise within the McDaniel Education Department to offer new courses directly related to early childhood development and topics focused on young learners. Masu.
In developing the program, McDaniel's education department consulted with existing partners at the university, including Carroll County Public Schools and Carroll Community College, and considered the impact on programs such as private child care centers, independent providers, and even Head Start. Starting in fall 2020, Professor McDaniel will directly prepare students for careers in growing fields such as actuarial science, American Sign Language (ASL), applied mathematics, biochemistry, biomedical sciences, criminal justice, food research, health sciences, and international business. In addition, McDaniel has launched a new accelerated Master of Science in Education program that allows students to earn a degree after four semesters, including a one-year internship with Carroll County Public Schools.
Students in the program will also be eligible for a $23,000 Teacher Collaboration Fellowship to support up to 24 new graduates and career changers who will enroll in the program in spring 2024 and summer 2024, which is currently underway.
