SGMC Health proudly announces a third class of eight resident physicians will be joining the health system this summer. With this addition, SGMC Health now boasts a complete program with her 24 resident physicians dedicated to the practice of internal medicine in the heart of South Georgia.
The Graduate Medical Education (GME) program in partnership with Mercer University School of Medicine (MUSM) is in its third year of great success and continues to launch additional medical training opportunities.
SGMC Health received more than 1,300 applications vying for a spot in this year's residency class. GME Leadership evaluated each applicant and completed over 100 interviews. This process culminated on matchday, March 15th. This is a pivotal moment for fourth-year medical students across the country, where applicants will learn where they will practice. The health system was proud to match her with eight outstanding candidates who will be based at SGMC Health for the next three years.
said program director Dr. Greg Beal. “Their dedication to advancing medical knowledge and serving the people of South Georgia is truly admirable. We look forward to their growth in our program and the high standards we provide to our patients.” I am confident that it will contribute to the care of patients.”
A medical resident is a medical doctor who has graduated from medical school, holds a degree such as an MD or PhD, and practices under the direct supervision of an “attending physician” or senior physician. Physicians can complete training to specialize in a particular area and become certified as a specialist or specialist.
Our collaboration with MUSM further enhances the educational experience offered by SGMC Health, providing residents with access to outstanding faculty and resources. This partnership underscores SGMC Health's commitment to developing the next generation of physicians who will play a vital role in shaping the future of health care in our region.
Outside of the hospital, the residency program operates a continuing care clinic at SGMC Internal Medicine on Park Avenue in Valdosta under the direction of Medical Director Joseph Hayes, MD. This allows residents the opportunity to learn how to manage both common and complex outpatient conditions and follow patients over time.
Research shows that residents often develop long-term connections with training locations and make significant contributions to their communities. SGMC Health is proud to serve as a foundation for these budding medical professionals, nurturing their skills and instilling a deep sense of dedication to the patients we serve. I am.
As SGMC Health continues to expand, we remain focused on providing comprehensive training opportunities and fostering a culture of excellence in medical education.
