The Maryland Department of Education released data on four-year cohort graduation rates for students graduating from Maryland public schools in spring 2023.
The 2023 four-year cohort graduation rate was 85.8%, down from 86.3% the previous year. Students in the 2023 cohort entered ninth grade during the 2019-2020 school year, and a significant part of their high school experience was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Starting in the spring of 2020, this student population experienced primarily virtual learning methods until returning to in-person learning in 11th grade.
“Maryland students are some of the brightest and brightest in the world, and our graduation rates are good, but we can do even better,” said Interim State Superintendent Carrie M. Wright. . “We have an opportunity to build a strong foundation for our education system to achieve the equitable and successful outcomes we want for all students.”
For most student groups, the 2023 four-year cohort graduation rate remained stable compared to the 2022 cohort graduation rate. The exception is the graduation rate for economically disadvantaged students, which rose from 75.7% in the 2021-2022 school year to 80.8% in the 2022-2023 school year.
Additionally, the four-year cohort graduation rate for Black/African American students increased slightly, reaching 84.7% in the 2022-2023 academic year, up from 84% the previous year.
“The latest graduation rate data highlights the urgency of our efforts to fully implement the priorities of Maryland's Future Blueprint and Strategic Plan. Only through change can we ensure that every student in Maryland graduates high school and is prepared to succeed in college, career, and life.'' Clarence C. Kloh, Maryland State Board of Education “This work is already happening in many schools across the state,” said President Ford. “Now is the time to share what we've learned and continue working every day to transform Maryland into a world-class school system.” came.”
The Maryland Department of Education also released the five-year cohort graduation rate, which is the percentage of students who graduate within five years. Of the 67,072 students who enrolled in ninth grade during the 2018-2019 school year, 88.2% graduated by the 2022-2023 school year, down from 89% the previous year. Maryland's cohort graduation rate follows the cohort of students from their first year through their fourth year, as required by federal reporting standards.
